Santa Clarita Fire Station #108
- Client: Los Angeles County Fire Department
- Location: Santa Clarita, California
- Project: Native Planting
- Scope: Water Conscious Irrigation Installation, Native Planting
- Pierre Client Since: Oct 2007
The Client
With the expansion of the Santa Clarita Valley, the Los Angeles County Fire Department had plans to erect fire station number 108. As a new development, the city strove to build a station that reflected the sanctity of water as a firefighting resource but also fit with the local topography. Santa Clarita experiences dry and warm conditions throughout most of the calendar year. Since its location at the top of the Valley’s mountainous range places the station in prime sunlight employing native landscaping was critical.
The Project
Over 17,000 square feet was landscaped with plants native to the dessert climate Southern California experiences. 1,300 shrubs and 213 trees were placed throughout the property. Mulch was applied between shrubbery and trees to minimize water evaporation during the warm summer months while drip irrigation was installed to precisely administer water to keep plants healthy and uniform year round.
The Result
Over two years later, the trees and shrubs have grown in to healthy, mature plants. The drip irrigation system has saved the city time and maintenance costs by avoiding manual watering while the mulch reduces water costs by keeping moisture from escaping. The native plants have survived Santa Clarita’s summer months and continue to thrive.
