Spread over 1,184,095 square feet of land, Mira Monte High School was a brand new construction for the Kern County School District. Like most new developments, the school was planned to alleviate overcrowding at surrounding schools. As such, plans promised the 9th through 12th school grounds would be equipped with 18 buildings for classrooms, staff and teacher offices, cafeteria, gymnasium and more. The landscape design involved basketball and tennis courts, two soccer fields, two baseball diamonds, two softball fields, and a full size football field. Intricate planters were also planned amongst the buildings and lunch areas for the school community to enjoy.
Pierre's services were retained by SC Anderson, Inc., a general contractor in the local Bakersfield area. Pierre knew going into the project that communication would be key to successfully coordinating construction on such a large site. Pierre crews made a point to keep SC Anderson abreast of their progress and any obstacles.
The landscaping was completed in phases so that the school could open for the 2008-2009 school year. As such, Pierre crews began first on the planters and smaller lawn areas between and around the building structures. Fields were scheduled to begin while class was in session. This presented itself as another challenge: student safety.
Pierre took extra care to fence off the construction areas and heighten their awareness while Mira Monte was open for classes. Because Pierre's experience working on site while school is in, there were no safety incidents throughout the entire construction period. After several months of laying the fields, they were open to the students for the remainder of the year.
